Hardwood FAQ

Can we install hardwood flooring if we have a dog or other indoor pets?

Many homeowners with pets install hardwoods. However, pet damage to the flooring is not included under warranties by most manufacturers.

Keep claws trimmed to avoid scratches to the finish. If possible, don’t place the food and water bowls directly on the flooring.

What is the most durable hardwood floor?

There isn’t a specific wood species that is harder than the rest, but you can determine durability by assessing the hardness.

Refer to the Janka Hardness rating for a true indication of hardness on selected species.

Is it safe to use hardwood flooring in a kitchen?

Be cautious about using hardwood flooring in a kitchen. Kitchens are prone to food and liquid spills which can stain the finish permanently.

Wipe up spills immediately with a dry, clean cloth, and mop if necessary.

Is a solid wood flooring better than an engineered wood floor?

No, both types are quality options. What matters more is your intended use, personal preference and your budget.

Engineered hardwood is almost as durable as solid hardwood, it just can’t be refinished several times like solid hardwood.

Can we install hardwood flooring over concrete?

Engineered hardwood floors can be glued down or floated over a dry, clean, fully-cured concrete slab that is on or below grade.

If moisture or humidity is very high at certain times of the year, a non-wood flooring option would be a better option.

Can I use a paste wax on my hardwood flooring?

Today, most hardwood floors have a urethane finish that will cloud up and become sticky if a paste wax is applied to it.

Can we install hardwood flooring of radiant heat?

You can, depending on the type of radiant heat used in the home.

We generally recommend installing a "floating" engineered wood floor over the radiant heated subfloor, but the installation must be done according to the manufacturer's specifications.

The sub-floor’s surface temperature cannot exceed 85 degrees because it will dry out or distort the wood planks.

Check the manufacturer's warranty to make sure it covers  installing their flooring over a radiant heated subfloor.
